Cala Mesquida

Just half an hour from Barkala Mula, Cala Mesquida is one of the northeast coast's most beautiful beaches — a wide arc of soft golden sand framed by rolling dunes and fragrant pine forest, all protected as a natural area. The water shifts from clear shallows to deep turquoise, perfect for a long swim or a slow morning by the shore, while the surrounding paths invite a scenic coastal walk. Wild in spirit yet easy to enjoy, with a seasonal lifeguard, sunbeds and beach bars in the summer months.

Cala Agulla

Around half an hour from Barkala Mula, Cala Agulla is a wide, welcoming bay of fine white sand hugged by protected pine woods. Its clear, gently shelving water stays shallow near the shore — ideal for families and easy swimming — while the shaded coastal path behind the beach leads to beautiful viewpoints and neighbouring coves. Lively yet spacious, with a seasonal lifeguard, sunbeds and beach bars in summer; arrive early in high season for the calmer, quieter far end by the forest.

Cala Torta

About 25 minutes' drive from Barkala Mula — then a short walk from the car park — Cala Torta is the wild jewel of Artà's coastline. A broad sweep of golden sand backed by dunes and low scrub, it lies within protected parkland, so there's no development to break the spell: just turquoise water, open sky and the sound of the sea. Its untamed beauty is the reward for the little effort to reach it, though the shore can turn lively on windy days. A seasonal lifeguard watches the beach, but bring water and shade, as there are no bars or facilities.

Cala Gat

A little over half an hour from Barkala Mula, tucked just beyond the harbour of Cala Rajada, Cala Gat is a small, sheltered cove with some of the clearest water on the east coast. Framed by pines that lean right down to the sand, its calm, protected shallows are wonderful for swimming and snorkelling among the fish. You can reach it on a pretty seaside stroll from the town, and there's a beach bar right there for a drink in the shade. Intimate and picture-perfect — come early, as the little strip of sand fills quickly in summer.
