About the Finca
What is Barkala Mula?
Barkala Mula is a restored Mallorcan finca on the outskirts of Artà, surrounded by olive trees, terraced gardens, and open countryside. It’s a quiet, slow‑living environment designed for rest, creativity, and connection with nature. We host individual guests, small groups, and occasional retreats.
Where is the finca located?
We are located approximately 2km outside Artà, in the northeast of Mallorca. The drive from Palma Airport typically takes 55–65 minutes. Artà’s restaurants, cafés, and weekly market are a short drive away.
What is the atmosphere like?
Calm, rural, and deeply Mediterranean. Expect birdsong, the sound of sheep bells, and long, warm evenings. It’s not a hotel - it’s a lived‑in finca with character, history, animals, and a natural rhythm.
What makes the finca unique?
Our blend of nature, animals, gardens, and thoughtful design creates a retreat‑style experience. Guests often describe it as “a place where you exhale”.
Accommodation & Amenities
What types of rooms are available?
We offer a small number of rooms, each with its own character. All have been renovated in harmony with the building’s heritage. They are comfortable, quiet, and designed with natural materials.
What amenities are included?
Guests have access to the pool, gardens, terraces, shared covered spaces, Wi‑Fi, and outdoor seating areas. Towels, bedding, and basic toiletries are provided.
Is the finca suitable for remote work?
Yes. The finca has reliable Wi‑Fi and several quiet spots to work. Many guests combine rest with focused work sessions.
Do rooms have air conditioning or heating?
Both. Rooms are equipped with heating for cooler months and air conditioning for summer. Room 1818 has a wood fireplace for the additional romantic and nostalgic touch.
Is the property child‑friendly?
The finca is a working rural environment with animals, uneven terrain, and open water. For safety reasons, we are best suited to adults and children 10 years or older. We recommend close supervision of children at all times.
Animals & Nature
What animals live on the finca?
We share the land with donkeys, sheep, geese, chickens, a golden retriever, and a cat. They are part of daily life here.
Can guests interact with the animals
Guests are welcome to observe the animals and enjoy their presence, but feeding or entering enclosures is not recommended or encouraged for safety and welfare reasons.
Are there insects or wildlife
Yes. This is rural Mallorca - expect geckos, bees, wasps, and the occasional mosquito. We provide repellent and advice for comfort.
There is a wide variety of birds: finches, sparrows, pigeons, robins, quails, owls, eagles, falcons and vultures.
Snakes - There is a problem with (non-poisonous) snakes on Mallorca that were introduced approximately 20 years ago. Their population has increased during recent years. We have seen snakes on the property & have installed 4 solar-powered devices that are supposed to deter them. This is for everyone’s awareness when exploring.
Is the finca safe for people with allergies?
If you have severe animal allergies, please consider that pets and livestock live on the property. Rooms are cleaned thoroughly, but the environment is naturally animal‑rich. During spring, there is natural pollen present.
Food & Drink
Do you offer breakfast or meals?
Breakfast is available by prior arrangement. We offer Continental, Malaysian, Mallorcan and English style breakfasts - vegetarian, vegan, & gluten-free options are also available - using farm-fresh & seasonal produce. Please enquire at least the night before as to the menu options and timing if you would like breakfast on any particular day/s.
Similarly, any requirements for Lunch or Dinner may also be discussed and agreed at least the day prior.
Artà also has excellent restaurants.
Please note - Mallorca is well known for its well water with heavy calcium carbonate (CaCo3, or “Cal”). We offer all guests unlimited osmosis filtered water, in carafes, in each room - refillable at reception. You are also welcome to refill your daily water-bottle in reception.
Please help us to reduce our reliance on bottled water!
Are there restaurants nearby?
Yes. Artà, Colonia de Sant Pere, Capdepera, Son Serra de Marina, and Son Servera offer a wide range of dining options from casual cafés to refined Mediterranean cuisine.
Can guests cook on site?
Guests may use the shared pool-side BBQ during designated hours. We ask everyone to clean up after themselves and respect shared spaces.
Do you cater to dietary restrictions?
We can accommodate most dietary needs with advance notice.
Getting Here & Getting Around
How do I get to the finca?
The easiest route is by rental car or taxi from Palma Airport. We also offer a shuttle service if you prefer not to hire a car during your stay.
Do I need a rental car?
The finca is rural, and having a car makes exploring beaches, towns, and restaurants much easier. We also offer a local shuttle service to make your transportation logistics easier.
Is there parking on site?
Yes. We offer free on‑site parking for guests.
How far is the beach / natural parks?
Mallorca’s northeast beaches — Cala Torta, Cala Mesquida, Cala Agulla — are 15–25 minutes away by car.
We are also at the base of the Llevant National Park which is accessible with a 15minute drive.
Retreats, Events & Activities
Do you host retreats?
Yes. We host small retreats focused on wellbeing, creativity, and leadership. The finca’s layout supports quiet work, group sessions, and outdoor practice.
Can guests book the finca privately?
Yes. Private hire is available for groups, workshops, and special gatherings.
What activities are available?
Hiking, cycling, padel, beaches, markets, and nature walks are all nearby. On the finca, guests enjoy reading, swimming, and time with the animals.
We also offer olive-oil tasting - with oil made from the trees that surround the finca, by prior arrangement.
Our unique “Dome Dining” experience is also available - again by prior arrangement.
Do you offer guided experiences?
We occasionally offer guided farm walks, garden tours, or olive oil tastings, depending on the season.
Booking, Policies & Practicalities
What is the check‑in/check‑out time?
Check‑in begins at 16:00, giving us the time we need to prepare the finca and ensure your room is calm, clean, and ready for you.
Check‑out is by 10:00, which helps us reset the spaces for incoming guests.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation — it genuinely helps us keep the experience smooth for everyone.
What is your cancellation policy?
Our cancellation terms are clear and fair. Full details are provided at the time of booking.
Are pets allowed?
Yes. Socialised and calm pets are welcome after discussion with ourselves. With resident animals on the property and other guests, we cannot automatically accommodate all pet requests.
We appreciate your understanding.
Is smoking allowed?
Smoking is not permitted indoors. Due to fire risk, only designated outdoor areas may be used.
Is the finca accessible?
The finca has steps, uneven ground, and traditional architecture. It may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility.
Weather, Seasons & Expectations
What is the weather like?
Mallorca enjoys warm summers, mild winters, and long shoulder seasons. Spring and autumn are especially beautiful.
What should I pack?
Comfortable shoes, layers for evenings, swimwear, sun protection, and something warm for cooler months.
Is the finca quiet?
Yes — though rural quiet includes natural sounds: sheep bells, donkeys, birds (including owls at night), and the occasional rooster (thankfully, in the distance).
What is the best time to visit?
Each season offers something different: spring flowers, summer beaches, autumn harvest, winter calm.
Of course there are also many cultural festivities throughout the year in Arta and nearby towns - which have proven very popular with visitors wishing a more traditional & connected Mallorcan experience.
