Mornings in the olive groves, evenings under the stars.
And a spectacular view of the old town of Artà.

Welcome to paradise

Barkala Mula – Son Caminals is a boutique finca guesthouse in the countryside of Artà, Mallorca.

Surrounded by olive groves, open landscapes, animals, and the peaceful rhythms of rural life, Barkala Mula was created as a place where people can slow down and experience a more authentic side of the Balearic Islands.

Whether visiting for a romantic getaway, a wellness retreat or a few days of peace, our goal is simple: to create meaningful experiences in a beautiful natural setting.

Aerial view of a large house with a swimming pool in the backyard, surrounded by trees, a lawn, and a patio area with outdoor furniture. The house is enclosed by a stone wall, with a driveway and additional parking area nearby. The landscape includes scattered trees and open land.

The grounds

More than a place to sleep, Barkala Mula is a working finca (farm) where guests can gaze at olive groves from the poolside, see donkeys and sheep grazing near the terrace, while the geese and chickens will call out to alert their presence.

Set within a 4.3-hectare finca surrounded by rolling countryside, guests at Barkala Mula can enjoy:

  • Saltwater infinity pool overlooking the valley

  • Open-air outdoor kitchen and BBQ area

  • Our unique dome - a dining and event space

  • Olive groves and peaceful walking areas

  • Indoor and outdoor spaces to gather and connect

  • Sunrise and sunset views

  • Views towards historic Artà and its historic church, which dates back to 1573

The meaning behind the name

BARKALA

is an Australian Aboriginal word meaning “bush shade”. It represents nature, shelter and heritage.

MULA

represents roots, grounding and new beginnings.

Together, Barkala Mula represents a place where people can reconnect with their roots, slow down, and create space for something new.

Our residents

  • Flix

Our 16-year-old Golden Retriever has travelled with us from Singapore. She is very docile and child-friendly. Our official “good-will” ambassador.

  • Missy

A local Siamese-ish cat who adopted us not long after we moved into Barkala Mula. She is curious, but not tame. Loves to be petted, not picked up.

  • Estel and Castanya

The two friendly donkeys living in the surrounds, who graze in the olive groves and like to greet guests.

Barkala Mula is just a short drive from the historic town of Artà, which has one of the best weekly artisan markets on the island, along with great bars and restaurants, as well as the picturesque Santuari Sant Salvador church, visible from Barkala Mula.

There are so many picturesque beaches and coves nearby to choose from, such as Cala Torta and Cala Mesquida.

Meet Val

Hospitality has always been at the heart of what I do.

With a background in food, hospitality, and creating memorable experiences, I believe the smallest details often make the biggest difference — a warm welcome, a beautiful breakfast, meaningful conversations, and helping guests feel completely at ease.

Inspired by nature, slow living, and authentic connection, I created Barkala Mula as a place where people can step away from busy lives, reconnect with themselves, and experience a more peaceful side of Mallorca.

I look forward to welcoming you and sharing this special place.

Went to Barkala Mula for a brief get from the big city lights of Palma. It’s only an hour’s drive so much closer than it feels looking at the map.
The place was beautiful, and wonderfully finished to a really high standard.
The best thing was we’d picked a night with their Thai Cooking Class, so we had great fun making a five course meal - and making several new friends, who this being Mallorca were already friends of friends.
We no longer need to earn squillions to have a country finca, we shall just return to Val and Wes’s lovely hospitality!

What incredible hosts and a beautiful place! We had the most relaxing weekend at Barkala Mula. Everything about the place is so peaceful and calming. Drinking wine by the pool, surrounded by amazing natural (including donkeys and fresh eggs daily from their duck and geese). Also the beds/accommodation were second to none too, very comfortable and every last detail was thought out (from the fully stocked honestly bar/fridge to the bathrooms full of shower gels, shampoos and face serums. 100% recommended what more can I say except thank you and we'll definitely be back again!

Barkala Mula 🌿

    Barkala Mula
